FRIENDS OF RIPON CATHEDRAL MAKE A MAJOR CONTRIBUTION
TO THE NAVE ROOF FUND
The Friends of Ripon Cathedral
have made a major contribution to the cost
of replacing the nave roof of Ripon Cathedral.
In response to the urgent need for
work on the roof, the Friends established a special
Roof Appeal amongst members, which resulted in
a donation of £10,000 to the Cathedral Development
Campaign for the roof fund.
And in a second move, Friends made
a special donation of £3,000 as matched funding
which enabled Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust
to contribute funds totalling £30,000 for the
same purpose.
“The Friends’ efforts have resulted
in a total of more than £40,000 being contributed
to the roof project, which is a substantial amount
of money and represents the largest amount ever
raised through Friends’ efforts for a single
project in support of the Cathedral.” says Tom
Ramsden, vice-chairman of the Friends’ Council.
Work began on the Cathedral roof
in January and is expected to last 20 weeks.
Almost all the £517,000 required to finance the
work has been raised, with the support of English
Heritage, charitable trusts, corporate sponsors
and private individuals.
As well as raising funds to
support the Cathedral, the Friends hold a number
of events throughout the year, ranging from
lectures on cultural and historic matters to
visits to theatre performances in the region.
Their Annual Report includes fascinating articles
concerning the religious, musical and artistic
heritage of the Cathedral and is distributed
for their Annual General Meeting at which members
can attend lectures, meetings and a special
service. Membership is modest at £10 a year
for an individual or £15 for a couple.
